Blepharoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery in which excess skin tissue, fat deposits or muscle is removed from the upper and lower eyelids to improve the appearance of the eyes.
Blepharoplasty Treatments
Often times, this simple cosmetic surgery can remedy puffiness and bags under the eyes, as well as sinking upper eyelids and drooping eye lashes. Blepharoplasty is also performed to treat ptosis (drooping eyelid), a condition resulting from poor muscle tone or nerve damage. Blepharoplasty is often performed with another cosmetic procedure such as a brow-lift or a facelift because eyelid surgery, alone, does not treat sagging eyebrows, wrinkles or crow’s feet.
Blepharoplasty Procedure
If you believe you could benefit from the blepharoplasty procedure, discuss your options with a board-certified plastic surgeon and an Epic Vision ophthalmologist. Once you are deemed a good candidate, your blepharoplasty will probably be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.
During an upper eyelid procedure, incisions are made along the line creases of the upper eyelid. After fatty tissue, excess skin and muscle is removed, tiny sutures are used to close the incisions.
In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made along the lower lashline and smile creases. Fatty tissue, excess skin and muscle is removed, and the incision is closed with tiny sutures. When fatty tissue, but not skin, is removed, as in the case of eyelid puffiness, the surgeon performs a procedure called transconjunctival blepharoplasty where the incision is made inside the lower eyelid.
